Pittsburgh, PA, - August 9, 2024 - CorePower Magnetics today announced that it has won an R&D 100 Award in the category of IT/Electrical. This award honors CorePower’s innovative work on the Nanocrystalline Axial Flux Electric Motor, a breakthrough in electric motor technology, building upon research done with partners at Carnegie Mellon University. The R&D 100 Awards recognizes the 100 most innovative technologies of the year.
The award-winning motor technology marks a leap in motor design, integrating advanced capabilities of axial flux motor design with the superior magnetic properties of nanocrystalline materials to achieve unprecedented efficiency, power density, and thermal performance. This innovation is set to have a transformative impact on industries such as electric vehicles, renewable energy, and aerospace, where high-performance motors are critical to enabling next-generation solutions.
Developed by CorePower Magnetics from technology first invented at Carnegie Mellon University, this motor is a testament to what can be achieved when academic research is successfully transferred to industry. "Our collaboration with Carnegie Mellon University has been instrumental in developing this groundbreaking technology. It's a perfect example of how industry-academia partnerships can accelerate innovation and drive technological advancements that have real-world impact. We're not just creating new products; we're nurturing the next generation of innovators and leaders in the field," said CorePower Magnetics’ CEO, Dr. Sam Kernion.
This is the second technology within CorePower’s patent portfolio to be honored with the prestigious R&D 100 award, joining the Nanocrystalline Alloys for Gapless Inductors and Sensors technology that won in 2019. "The Nanocrystalline Axial Flux Electric Motor represents the culmination of years of research and development in advanced magnetic materials and demonstrates our consistent capability to translate cutting-edge materials research into transformative technologies. This innovation doesn’t just incrementally improve upon existing motors; it fundamentally reimagines motor design for the 21st century, setting new benchmarks for performance and sustainability," said CorePower’s CTO, Dr. Paul Ohodnicki.
